Online Trees/ Software Sessions


Our 27th June 2020 session on the FamilySearch tree will be back to normal, meeting at the Paraparaumu Library Meeting room.

Two-monthly user group on Online Trees

Last Saturday of the month (usually) starting February

Afternoons from 1:30 for 1:45-3:45pm
(Library closes 4pm).

$3 for rental/refreshments please

Have you wondered what at an online tree can do for you?

Or if you are using tree x to best advantage?

Of if there was a way to make sure you had a good copy of your online tree or research safely backed up elsewhere?

2020 dates:


Feb 29th: Ancestry (with or without FamilyTreeMaker)

Apr 18th: MyHeritage (with or without FamilyTreeBuilder); Held using Zoom.

Jun 27th: FamilySearch family tree

Aug 29th: WikiTree

Oct 31st: Using FamilySearch tree from your genie package
Wifi available, bring plug box if you need to connect to power.

Room holds a maximum of 40 people (seating 20 at tables comfortably)

Intended audience/notes about the sites:

For users, or intending users, of the main online trees and the software for your computer that is designed to work with them (or independently):

Ancestry online trees – free, subscription required to view source collections
and / or the software that can be used in conjunction FamilyTreeMaker (runs on Windows or Mac, no trial version available)

MyHeritage online trees – free (up to 250 people), subscription required for larger trees and source collections
and / or the companion FamilyTreeBuilder (free software runs on Windows or Mac)

WikiTree – online collaborative tree, free

FamilySearch online collaborative tree, free
Two sessions, one of which will include the software that can fully interface with it
ie RootsMagic – runs on Windows or Mac
and Legacy  – Windows only, but will run on Mac under a virtual machine
Both have free versions of their software you can try, and keep using, with a cost to upgrade to the full feature set.

Many of the above online trees also have apps for your mobile device.
